Chloe is sitting on the bathroom floor rifling through a drawer full of nail polish. I pop my head in the door and say, “I’m running to the supermarket, you need anything?”

“Why, what do you need at the supermarket tonight?”

“Cookie mix.”

“There’s flour and eggs here.”

“Listen, do you need anything or not?”

“Get some sunscreen,” she says, closing the drawer and standing, three bottles gripped between her fingers. “Snacks for the plane too.”

As she walks past I reach out for her shoulder. But she doesn’t stop. My hand grazes her arm, and she pretends not to notice.
